It was an honor to be a part of the inaugural Berrett-Koehler Foundation Action-Learning Fellowship. Not only did I meet an inspiring group of changemakers who provided valuable feedback and encouragement at a pivotal time in the development of CreatorsCircle, but the experience also helped me refine the organization’s mission statement and sharpen its strategic focus. While I have prioritized caring for my newborn daughter these past few months, I have made some progress on building the organization.
Specifically, this summer I worked with a budding programmer to develop the framework for a curated online database that will live on the CreatorsCircle website. The database (designed as a WordPress plugin) is set up to house a library of impact-focused enrichment opportunities — such as summer programs, internships, and conferences — that are specifically designed for diverse youth. The programmer with whom I worked to design the database is a computer science major from Stanford University who was paid to intern with CreatorsCircle this summer thanks to a program funded by the university to which I applied.
Now that the database’s framework is set up, I am in the process of populating it as I also build the website and solidify academic, media, and conference partnerships. I am especially excited about the academic and conference partnerships I’ve established; I’ll be organizing workshops for high school students at Oakland International High and Alliance Charter High in Los Angeles in January, as well as at the Global Climate Changemakers Conference in the Spring and SOCAP in the Fall of 2019.
Of course, this is all while also keeping an eye out for funding opportunities. Needless to say, my work is far from over. Even so, I am extremely inspired by what is shaping up and what’s to come. I look forward to sharing the launch of this organization with you next year. Stay tuned!
